57. 承前省略用法一例

【教材原句】

One of you will be a child and the other the grandmother. (p.5)

譯文：你們其中一個扮裝小孩，另一個扮裝祖母。

【用法說明】

One of you will be a child and the other the grandmother. 中的 the other the grandmother 實為 the other will be the grandmother 之省略。因為前面有了 will be，所以后面一句就承前省略了。又如：

The scenery was beautiful, and the acting superb. 布景很漂亮，演出也很出色。

On one side of the window is a mirror, and on the other a painting. 窗戶的一邊是一面鏡子，另一邊是一幅畫。

Now his health was poor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful, and his old age short of comforts. 現在，他健康欠佳，精神空虛，心情憂郁，缺少晚年應有的舒適。

譯文：明天北京天氣如何？

【質疑教材】

詢問天氣時，英語習慣上用以下兩個句型（意思相同，但表達不同）：

What’s the weather like?（用what，其后有介詞like）

How’s the weather?（用how，其后沒有介詞like）
